When’s the last time you walked into your biannual dental check up confident that you had done everything you could to keep your teeth squeaky clean and as healthy as ever? If you’re like most Americans, the answer is probably never! You may think to yourself “I do what I can, but I just don’t have the time to do everything I know I probably should.”
We have great news! What you should be doing won’t take you nearly as long as you thought, and it will definitely be worth it. Since it’s easy to justify skipping some of these steps, we’ve included the benefits to show you just how much each step matters to the overall health of your teeth.
1. Scrape Gently scrape the rounded edge and flat part of your tongue with a tongue scraper (or toothbrush if you don’t have one).
-removes buildup and bacteria
-prevents bad breath
Time: 20 seconds
2. Brush: Make sure you are covering all areas of your teeth, inside and outside of the gum line, and are varying your brush pattern. Don’t brush too hard or too soft. Rinse with water when finished.
Time: 2 minutes (2-3 times a day)
3. Floss: Use a rubbing motion to guide floss between your teeth. Wrap the teeth around to follow the curve of the tooth and rub it gently up and down. Repeat for all teeth.
-prevents tooth decay
-even prevents heart disease
Time: 3 minutes
4. Rinse: Use a mouthwash for added freshness and protection from bad breath, cavities, and gum disease. Measure the amount described in the directions, close your lips tightly with your teeth slightly apart, and swish away!
Time: 40 seconds
That’s it; it’s as easy as 1, 2, 3, 4! Plus, these steps are just our recommended routine for nightly cleaning. During the day, just start with number 2 when you wake up and you’re good to go until the evening . Study up, follow these simple steps, and you’re sure to strut in the doors of your next dental exam with a confident, A+ smile!
